October 2009 Newsletter (Capture vivid color)

Hello Raw Shooters

With October here, the most colorful season of the year provides opportunities for capturing beautiful vivid colors in our images (Fall colors on one side of the world and spring colors for our readers on the other side!) Recording the rich colors of nature has its challenges, requiring lots of practice and patience. So gear up with your cameras, lenses, flashes, and head out to enjoy the opportunities in outdoor photography!

Lots of portrait and family photography are scheduled for this time of the year. Even as a pro photographer you’ll often be amazed with the vividness of these colors. By using a longer focal length lens you can create even more dramatic effects.

I have good news for those of you who live in Lower Main Land BC or were students of my photography courses. I am offering a photography tour on Sunday October 18. It is a full day photography course and we’ll be shooting in some beautiful spots around Abbotsford B.C. This course is sponsored by Lens and Shutter Cameras and Mystic Mug. Here is more information about this wonderful event.

A full day of photography fun:

On October 18 come and join us for a new experience in photography.
Ted is running this special event to help you see and understand the significant variations of light at different times of the day.

We will meet at Mystic Mug coffee shop at 7AM for breakfast and will go out to take pictures at 8AM. We will be back to the coffee shop at 12PM for a lunch break and discussions, and go out again at 1:30PM to capture the afternoon light.
It is a full day of photography and lessons in exposure and composition. Ted will show you how to set your camera for different light conditions and how to use the rules of composition. There are many beautiful spots around us to be photographed. So join us on October 18th and discover them!
We will have our tour rain or shine!!
Tickets are available at Lens and Shutter Cameras.

Please contact me or abbotsford@lensandshutter.com for more details. I am going to cover a whole range of tips in outdoor photography: using different directional light, fill flash, slow synch flash, and much more.

Now on to the tip for this month:

One of our newsletter subscribers asked me to give suggestions for shooting Fall/Spring photography.  Here are some basic tips:

1. Use 14 bit raw file for wider tonal range.

2. Meter for highlight part of your subject and let us process the images for shadow to bring out more vivid color and details for you.
3. Use spot metering to capture more contrast.
4. If your camera does not have small area spot metering, you can use center weight metering and compensate for +.5 in your exposures.
5. Since the sunlight is very directional and lower on the horizon, try using a “rim light” effect which creates a nice glow around the edges of your subject.
6. When using backlight, compensate the exposure to the face of your subject by using a light reflector or flash.
7. Try different angles: lay down on the ground, point your camera upward to your subject, use shadows to create guide lines, and whatever else your imagination sees for recording the amazing colors of the season.
