I was asked why when you downsize an image, the sharpness reduces as well. In this tip I am going to explain it a little bit and show you how to resize your image without losing the sharpness and quality. You can make an Action for batch processing to save even more time.  Never used an Action before?  Please refer to our April 2008 newsletter for
complete instructions:  HERE

How do I downsize image/images without losing the quality?

When you resize a large, sharp photo to a smaller size you may find that the new image has lost its sharpness. This is a common problem when changing the size of large, clear images. The blurry look can detract from the quality of the image.

Unlike in photo enlargement where jagged edges are a problem, downsizing results in the opposite aliasing artifact: moiré.  The prevalence of moiré largely depends on the type of interpolator used, although some images are much more susceptible than others.  This tutorial compares different approaches of how to downsize an image and keep the sharpness, and makes recommendations based on their results.

In adobe Photoshop CS or newer you can easily resize a photo and maintain the quality. Just follow the steps and you will find another amazing tool in Photoshop!

To reduce the size of a picture without losing too much resolution go to Image> Image Size. Click on Resample Image and then pick Bicubic Sharper from the options. This will produce the best results when resizing an image as it significantly reduces the blurring of the image when you change its size.

When you want to increase the size of an image, but want to minimize the resolution loss choose Bicubic Smoother.

This method is extremely effective in keeping the sharpness of the image. You can create two sets of Action, one for your downsizing and one for your upsizing.
The magical numbers for a very good 4x6 image size that prevent your clients from printing images larger that 4x6 are shown in this image:
