How can I add a simple border to my images using Photoshop Action?

By using the Action in Photoshop you can create a smoother work flow and save time.
Here is an example of how to create a very useful action.

  1. Open an image in Photoshop (you need Photoshop CS or newer).

2- Go to Action tab and select Create new action.Picture 3.jpg

3- In the new action window choose a name for your new action.  For this example I called it black border.

4- Click on the Record button and the actions you select will be recorded.

5- Go to Image and select Canvas size...

6- Change the value of Width and Height from the drop down window from pixel to inches.

7- Choose the size of your border.  In this example I selected 0.5 for the width and the height. You can also select different sizes for the horizontal and vertical sides.

8- Click the box for Relative to select it.

9- Choose your color from the drop down window of Canvas extension color. You can select white, black, gray or others.  Select other to pick a color that best matches your photograph..

This simple example demonstrates how to set up a work flow using the Action feature in Photoshop.   Now that you have an action for your customized border, you can add a border to other images by opening the photos in Photoshop and click on play button.  Action will do the job for you in no time!

Do you miss your Infra red images? Next month I am going to show you how to create an infra red filter in Photoshop.

In the meantime, get creative with custom borders and practice time saving techniques by learning to use the Action feature.

Happy RAW shooting.
