Raw Digital Image Editing

July 2008 Newsletter

Hello Raw Shooters

I want to begin this month’s newsletter with a simple example of how
shooting RAW allows for dramatic exposure correction. This picture
was captured on a Nikon D300 with the 28-70 Nikkor lens. I deliberately
shot it two stops over exposed – notice how everything is washed out
with no details. On first glance, most would agree this photograph is beyond
repair and not worth keeping

But what a difference a few adjustments can make!  Wow!

Using RAW format provides us with peace of mind, knowing that not only can we correct and adjust white balance but the exposure too.

This example demonstrates the amount of data in a RAW file which, through proper editing, transforms a blah shot into a great photograph!

Next month I will show you another capability of the power of RAW format.

For July I promised to discuss how to create an action for Vignette, but some of our readers emailed to say that this action is already available on some other websites.
I did some research and found that you can download a good one from HERE.
I tested the action and it works just fine. Thanks to our readers and Brian Hancock for this nice action!  We love to hear from you - please send your feedback to:

So here’s another idea for this month’s tip. Do you have an Action for your album pages? Something like this photo?

Whenever you create an Action, it becomes very quick and easy to create album pages like this one in no time

How to create an album page action in Photoshop

1. Open a picture in Photoshop and go to Action Tab and select Create new Action.
2. Choose a name for the Action, for example: Soft BG. For the SET section leave it as Default Actions.atn.
3. Click on Record button.
4. Now press Command+J (In Mac)/Control+J (In Windows) to copy the picture as a new layer.
5. Click on the eye icon on the layer pallet to make your new layer invisible. Then select the original layer by highlighting it.

6. Go to Filter>Blur>Gaussian Blur and select the radius to your desire.
7. Now go back to layer pallet and select the copied layer by highlighting it.

8. Press Command+A (Mac)/Control+A (Windows) to select the entire image.

9. Press Command+T (Mac)/Control+T (Windows) to enable the Free transform, then click in one corner of the image and resize it to the size that you like. Be careful that this is a free transform and you should keep the proportion of your image

10. Select the move Tool and position the resized layer in centre of your canvas or wherever you like. Then press Enter.

11. Go to Layer > Layer Style > Outer Glow and then adjust the size of the outer glow according to your picture.

12. Deselect the selected area and then go to the Layer and Flatten the Layer.

13. Click Stop to finish recording the Action and you’re done!

The next time you apply this Action, it will only take a few seconds to create a nice Album Page! And remember that you can apply special effects to multiple images through Batch Processing.

That's all for this month.  As always, we appreciate your feedback.  Please send comments, questions and suggestions to:Feedback
